What fits in a 20-yard dumpster

  • A whole-house cleanout of a typical 3-bedroom home
  • Most single-layer asphalt shingle roofs on a typical one-story home
  • Flooring removal across most of a house
  • A large kitchen remodel plus adjacent rooms
  • A mid-size deck or a long run of old fence

These are rough rules of thumb from typical household projects. Actual capacity depends on how well the load is broken down and packed.

When it’s the right size

If you only remember one size, remember this one. The 20-yard is the most common residential roll-off because it handles the jobs homeowners actually take on: an estate or rental cleanout, a roof, or a remodel that spreads beyond one room. It’s longer than the smaller boxes, so measure your driveway first (see how to prepare your driveway).

When to choose a different size

Avoid filling a 20-yard with dense material like soil or concrete; it will exceed most weight allowances well before it’s full.

Weight, pricing and availability

Every hauler sets its own weight allowance and overage rules for each container size. We don’t publish a weight limit here because it depends on the hauler serving your address, so ask when you call.
