A move is the best time to get rid of what you don’t want to pay to haul. A short-term roll-off lets you clear a garage, purge furniture and toss the leftovers after the truck pulls away.
Timing it
- Before the move: book the dumpster for the week you pack, so broken furniture and junk go out before the movers arrive and you’re not paying to move it.
- After the move: for sellers, a dumpster on the last weekend clears what’s left before the walkthrough.
- Landlords and property managers: a roll-off between tenants handles abandoned items in one trip.
Size tips
Most moving cleanouts fit a 10-yard or 15-yard. Pick a 20-yard if you’re clearing a whole house of furniture.
Don’t forget
- Donate usable furniture and household goods first.
- Leftover paint, cleaning chemicals, propane cylinders and electronics usually can’t go in the box. See the prohibited items list.
- If you’re selling, ask the hauler to place the box where it won’t block buyers’ parking or the listing photos.
