Asphalt shingles are among the heaviest debris homeowners deal with, so roofing is the job where size and weight matter most. A typical single-layer tear-off on a modest home fits in a 15-yard or 20-yard. Multiple layers or a large roof may need a second haul rather than a bigger box.

Planning a tear-off

  • Count your layers. Two or more layers of shingles roughly multiply the weight. Tell the hauler up front.
  • Place the box close to the eave so crews can drop debris straight in, but keep it off landscaping, septic lids and sprinkler lines.
  • Tarp the box at the end of the day. Carson Valley afternoon winds can lift loose underlayment and blow it into neighbors’ yards.
  • Keep it shingles only if you can. Mixing roof debris with household junk can change how a load is handled. Ask the hauler.
  • Old wood shake roofs are bulkier and lighter than asphalt, so size up by volume instead.

Weight

We don’t publish weight limits here. Each hauler sets its own allowance and overage rules for each size, so get those details when you call.
